Though the topic of remote or virtual working has been around for quite some time, the greater legal community has been slow in embracing the possibilities. There have long been a myriad of concerns that made working from home, for instance, rather unattractive to a profession that prides itself on strategically (and I might say ‘aesthetically’) appointed offices. With the global outbreak of the COVID-19 virus, law firms have been given no choice but to throw that caution to the wind. The good news is that it seems to be working, i.e., we seem to still be working! But what does this mean behind the scenes, especially for litigators who are used to pressing the flesh? Our colleagues at PacerPro are asking litigators and techsperts directly and offering you the chance to listen in on a pair of live conversations this Thursday (April 16). It is all taking place online and registration is free!

If you peruse the LAC Group blog, you’ll see many articles on the growing need for law firm librarians to demonstrate their value.

My colleague Ron Friedmann, a highly-respected expert in legal technology and knowledge management, recently presented on how law firm research and intelligence centers can contribute to firm profits. This was at an ARK (Applied Research & Knowledge) Group hosted conference, Best Practices & Management Strategies for Law Firm Library, Research & Information Services. LAC Group was a sponsor.

Here we are on May 31 and I just realized that I was derelict in sharing with you all my list of “must read” articles for the month. As they say, it is better to be late than never. Luckily, the day is not quite done where I am sitting, so I will chalk this one up to making it in just under the wire.  Here’s hoping some of these resonate with you.

The Cool Tools Café program at this year’s AALL Annual Meeting showcased–like it always does–many great presentations concerning implementing technologies to improve library offerings. For those unfamiliar with the format of the Cool Tools Café, the program features a variety of demonstrations set up in different stations inside a large conference room—attendees are given free rein to wander around and scope out the various presentations on technologies. Standing out among these was the presentation conducted by CUNY Library Associate Professor & Emerging Technologies Librarian Alex Berrio Matamoros; Alex’s presentation regarded law librarians using screencasting software as a teaching tool.

The Exhibit Hall at AALL showcased a clear trend towards vendors offering visualization tools to improve the process of legal researching. It often seems that the heroes who work so hard on contributed papers end up having ther praises unsung. Luckily, the Special Libraries Association is belting out a tune of praise for its scholars from this year’s annual conference.
